By Mom of 2
I too had used an actual ERGO daily for over a year before giving it back to the friend I borrowed it from. I really do love Ergos. I have not used a carrier on my guy for over a year, but found myself wanting one just in case of an emergency, he is a heavy just turned 3 year old now, he is around 30lbs and if for some reason I have to leave in an emergency I will want a way to carry him because he is still too slow to keep up with the rest of us but I still have hands free to hold onto my 5 and 7 year olds. We used an ergo from when my youngest was 9mo to when he turned 2 years before giving it back to my friend. My youngest is adopted from Korea where he was very much a carried baby and the ERGO was perfect for his transition. He went to sleep in it. Every naptime and every bedtime for at least 4 months. But now just looking for a carrier for emergencies.
I was not about to buy an ERGO for a maybe just in case emergency but luckily found the Infantino Ergonomic Union Carrier today at a thrift store for $3. Yes for $3 I thought I could give it a go.
This is how I found it differnt than the actual ERGO brand. Size wise about the same. The outside fabric is not near as soft, this is more like backpack material, where the ergo was a softer fabric. Structure wise it is about the same. Waist strap and such felt really familar when I put it on. I back carry exclusivly, and I was used to putting him into the ERGO solo, they reccomend for this one to not even attempt this on your own on the video for the Infantino. My son is used to being hoisted back there so we tried it out in the store. I can see how this would be about impossible for your average carrier user or beginner but I was able to do it. The part that makes it harder is that the straps on the Infantino connect to the waist strap. They connect to the body of the carrier with an actual ERGO and there is not need for "leg straps" because of this. So because the straps connect to the waist you have to put your childs legs through the straps when you put your arms though the straps. This was the MAIN difference I saw between the two carriers. Where they have the so called "leg straps" which I am not sure are even needed for larger children at all, is about where the regular straps connect on an Ergo brand. So yes it is a little harder to get child into the infantino carrier.
Once he was in I did my usual adjustments although there was a few extra straps to adjust with the Infantino. I could tell there was a bit more weight on my shoulders than on my hips. Ergo put quite a bit of weight on my hips which is great because my hips can take it, but my shoulders wear out quickly, but I think that haveing the straps connect to the waist band of the carrier is what changes this from the ERGO. Straps were padded enough and were comfy, but I found the fabric not as soft as the actual ERGO. Once you start walking around friction makes a difference in your shoulder and neck areas.
It didn't feel like he could get seated down into the bottom of the carrier as easily. I kept wanting to pull the back up a bit higher but I think that was mainly because he is a year older now and any carrier is natually going to hit him lower than it did before. He said he was comfy enough, but being 3 he was not too excited about being carried, he would rather be down and GO GO GO. So he didn't ride long.
I am super happy I found this, and for the $3 I paid for it, it will more than work for what I want to use it for.
I do think it is an affordable alturnative to an ERGO. But if I had the choice to buy a used ERGO for $40 or buy this carrier new for $40 I would hands down buy the ERGO for these reasons. 1. Softer fabric, (it really makes a difference, not for the child, but for the mom. Hard to explain, but it does. 2. Ease of use solo, because honestly you need something you can use solo as a mom, or it is not gonna get used. 3. ERGO just has the weight thing figured out, Infantino came close but I was still trying to adjust and adjust to make things feel right, and no matter what I did, I just couldn't get things adjusted to feel as comfortable as I did in the ERGO.
I do think that if you had no other choice this would work as an alternative for a carrier for a larger child, but my heart is still with ERGO.
That is why I gave the infantino a rating of "It's OK" because it is "OK" I can say "I Like It" because I know I won't be using it all the time, and I only paid $3 for it at a thrift store, but like I said, given the choice, I would go used ergo before new infantino union.
Hope this helps!

By VeraP
I had my sister, who typically uses a BabyBjorn carrier, give this Infantino a try. Her thoughts were:
- The Infantino is about half the price of a BabyBjorn and just as effective
- Instead of carrying the baby in the front facing you or facing out, the Infantino gives you a choice of carrying the baby in the front (facing you) or on your back, essentially facing your neck. The position is really a thing of personal preference.
- The Infantino is perfect for infants and kids up to 40 lbs, while the Original BabyBjorn is only good for up to 22lbs. So not only is the Infantino much cheaper, but you can also use it for much longer.
- The Infantino seemed to provide much more back and shoulder support than the BabyBjorn or other carrier she's tried
- The one difficult feature of the Infantino was that it if you choose to carry your child in the front, you have to snap the carrier close in the back. It's nearly impossible to get it on this way without the help of another person.

By Jeremy Bensley
Mrs. Bensley review:
I specifically bought this carrier earlier this year for my second little girl (she is now about to be 18 months old) to wear on my back. I have used ring slings, wraps, and Baby Bjorns for front carrying but they are bulky and time-consuming. I am a plus-sized person so using pre-sized carriers are not really an option. I wanted an easy back carrier that I could use when I was the only adult around.
At first, I was disappointed in two things: (1) the instructions said users had to have help putting the carrier on and (2) my child's head seemed "squished" which I chalked up to age and didn't bother making any adjustments. So, I left it alone for a few months.
When I tried it again, my child LOVED it. The back of her neck was above the back of the carrier and she could move her head and arms around quite freely (She is always grabbing things off shelves or she can hold a snack and a sippee cup, so on). This carrier is BY FAR the most comfortable and easiest to use. Note that I did not use this carrier for a small baby nor have I used it front-facing use.
I was initially intimidated by the instructions for requiring assistance. I decided to practice putting it on by myself a few times. Now I'm a pro! Here's how I do it:
1. I snap the lower belt buckle as if I were going to wear my child in the front
2. I insert child and check each foot for the right insert location (i.e. in the leg holes, not the straps)
2. I slide her to my hip and confirm her feet are not inserted in the arm straps. I also lift up the arm strap so it's not hanging down to low to reach.
3. I use my right had to hold and slide her to the back while using my left hand to go through the arm strap.
4. I insert my right arm into the arm strap and snap the front snap.
5. I tuck in the extra belt piece in the front so it's not dangling out.
I am able to do this in a snap. I choose to use this carrier constantly: grocery shopping, from the car to the gym daycare, etc. I have replaced the stroller with this carrier. If I have more than 1 bag to carry (i.e. baby bag plus food cooler, for instance) I use the stroller to carry my stuff! It's also nice if I don't want to haul around the double-stroller; I can use the single stroller and the backpack carrier for both children.
I love the weight distribution on this carrier. I hardly feel that I'm carrying her. I wear her for hours and do not have discomfort. I attempted to wear my 3 1/2 year old and, while I was ok for a while, she was heavy and decided she didn't like the leg fitting for her. Again, I did not make any adjustments for her as I like how everything is for my younger child. I used the carrier throughout this past summer and, while there were times that my child was hot and sweaty, she was never uncomfortable or unsafe.
My only complaints:
(1) When my child falls asleep her head hangs back. I wish there was a hood attachment to keep her head against my back when she is asleep. I have just purchased some fabric and matching plastic clips to attempt to make one myself (should be easy to resolve as there are small straps on each side of the arm straps to attach these hooks). We'll see!
(2) I smashed one buckle side (the male piece) in the car door and broke a small attachment piece. That is a negative for using plastic. However, it is still working quite securely. I am in-process of checking the warranty status. I FULLY PLAN ON BUYING ANOTHER ONE if there is not a warranty option.
(3) Color options would be nice. :) I just see the lack of options as an excuse to sew something cute on it, including a pocket (though I haven't felt a need for a pocket yet).
